The Year of Non-Holidays

This year of the twins' first holidays have been really low key. Sort of non-holidays.

Tonight, their first New Year's Eve, was spent taking a bath, which they hated. But an entire family that smelled of sour milk and vomit meant that everyone needed a bath today.

After their bath they got to wear the outfits that Santa brought them. They are Newborn size, so that means they are growing! I pulled out all their preemie stuff- some things never worn- to be sorted and put away. I also got all their 0-3 month clothes ready to use. We'll probably start putting them in some of those too, even if they don't fit just yet.

This week will be busy too. We're planning a trip to see our nurses on Wednesday or Thursday and then Saturday we're going to Babies R Us. (Amazing what becomes a 'busy' week after you have twins...) At Babies R Us we're getting them a bathtub and some tummy time mats.

Well, it's about half an hour away from the New Year and I hear Reagan fussing for food, so that's how we'll be ringing in our first New Year's as a family...

A Little Background...

I think for the first post a little history is in order...

Like the description says, John and I went through 3 years of TTC before we started our first cycle with IVF in late March/early April of 2007. On April 23 we found out that our cycle was a success and we were pregnant. On May 11 we went in for our first ultrasound to make sure there was a heartbeat. That's when we learned that both of our embryos had taken and we were going to have twins. It felt a little like hitting the lottery. Right away I nicknamed the twins Spot (Baby A- Reagan) and Dot (Baby B- Jason). The first few weeks of the pregnancy flew by with little trouble. I had no morning sickness and the only symptom I had to deal with was extreme fatigue. Around 12 weeks we found out that my cervix was shorter than it should be so we started to have ultrasounds to check that every two weeks. It was fairly stable until 21.5 weeks when it shortened again. At 22 weeks (Aug 27) I had an emergency cerclage (stitch to hold the cervix together...) put in and was admitted for hospital bed rest for what we thought would be the duration of the pregnancy. Those first few weeks were really tough, but I have the most amazing, supportive husband and had the most amazing, supportive nurses. I ended up surprising myself, the nurses, and my doctors. I was on hospital bed rest for 13 weeks and 2 days. And then I got to go home- pregnant. Something no one thought would happen. On December 3- 36 weeks exactly- I had the cerclage removed and was officially off bed rest. That day I was 1cm and 90% effaced. My next check-up would be the following Friday. I spent those few days doing things I had been dreaming about for the past several weeks- I went shopping, went out to eat, and went through all the baby things. Then Friday morning we woke up and went to see the doctor where we learned I was 5cm and ready to go! Because Baby B (Jason) was mostly transverse (sideways) we decided to do a c-section. Within 2 hours of my appointment I was in the OR having babies.

Reagan was born at 1:16pm weighing 5lbs10oz and was 18.5 inches long.
Jason was born at 1:17pm weighing 5lbs7oz and was also 18.5 inches long.

They were both perfect and needed no time in the NICU.

They are now 3 weeks old and we've all been home for a while now. John and I are learning to live on very little sleep and the twins are growing. (They're now able to wear newborn size clothes! At first the only things that fit were preemie outfits.) We hope that one day they are able to finally sleep for more than 2 or 3 hours at a time.

Life as parents has begun...
